in severe asthma...
Relief of psychic stress is often as important as control of offending allergens in the successful treatment of many patients with severe asthma.
THORAZINE can be highly effective...
'Thorazine' has a definite place in the treatment of severe asthma. The unique ataraxic, tranquilizing effect of 'Thorazine' controls the emotional
processes which may either cause or aggravate and prolong the severe asthmatic attack.
Furthermore, 'Thorazine' -- unlike calming agents previously used -- causes little or no respiratory depression.
It goes without saying that not all cases of asthma are suitable for 'Thorazine' therapy.
'Thorazine' is most useful when the psychic element is important.
'Thorazine' should be used discriminately and, before prescribing, the physician should be fully conversant with the available literature.
'Thorazine' is available in ampuls, tablets and syrup (as the hydrochloride), and in suppositories (as the base).

THORAZINE can allay the suffering caused by the pain of SEVERE BURSITIS
The ataractic, tranquilizing action of 'Thorazine' can reduce the anguish and suffering associated with bursitis.
'Thorazine' acts not by eliminating the pain, but by altering the patient's reaction -- enabling her to view her pain with a "serene detachment"
... Howell and his associates(1) reported: "Several of [our patients] expressed the feeling that ['Thorazine'] put a curtain between them and their pain,
so that whilst they were aware that the pain existed, they were not upset by it."

reduces hyperactivity and aggressiveness
decreases anxiety and hostility
improves mood, behavior and sleeping habits

increases amenability to supervision
facts to bear in mind --
Even though the dramatic calming effect of 'Thorazine' on belligerent, overactive children may give the impression of a cure,
simultaneous supportive counseling and guidance are necessary if lasting benefits are to be assured.
Adequate dosage for certain seriously disturbed youngsters will sometimes exceed 50-100 mg. t.i.d. 'Thorazine' should be
administered discriminately and, before prescribing, the physician should be fully conversant with the available literature.
'Thorazine' is available in ampuls, tablets and syrup (as the hydrochloride), and in suppositories (as the base).

Psychotherapy and Thorazine*...
a "combined therapy" most effective in the treatment of hyperkinetic emotionally disturbed children
Improvement was noted by Freed and Peifer in 21 of 25 hyperkinetic emotionally disturbed children who received 4 to 16 months of psychotherapy and 'Thorazine'.
Combativeness reduced
"Diminution in hyperactivity was the outstanding phenomenon. Combativeness was reduced considerably. There was a definite improvement in willingness to learn.
Trends toward increased emotional control were evidenced, although the basic personality seems unchanged."
Interpersonal relationships improved
'Thorazine', according to the authors, "dampens primitive fight-flight responses" without impairing consciousness and the learning process,
thereby improving interpersonal relationships.

Precautions: For use in patients who are hospitalized or under adequate supervision. Potentiation of C.N.S. depressants may occur (reduce dosage of C.N.S. depressants
when used concomitantly.) Antiemetic effect may mask other conditions. Possibility of drowsiness should be borne in mind for patients who drive cars, etc.
In pregnancy, use only when necessary to the welfare of the patient. Use with caution in patients with angina or impaired cardiovasculary systems.
Prolonged administration of high doses may result in accumulative effects with severe C.N.S. or vasomotor symptoms.
Side effects: Occasionally dry mouth; nasal congestion; constipation; amenorrhea; mild fever; hypotensive effects, sometimes severe with I.M. administration;
epinephreine effects may be reversed; dermatological reactions; neuromuscular (extrapyramidal) symptoms (motor restlessness, dystonias, pseudo-parkinsonism) may occur
and, in rare instances, may persist; weight gain; miosis; lactation and moderate breast engorgement (in females on high dosages); insomnia; dizziness; muscular weakness;

in many gastrointestinal disorders
THORAZINE* "would appear to be... tranquilizing agent of choice..."
in many gastrointestinal disorders... functional as well as secondary to organic disease such as spastic colon, peptic ulcer and
a variety of other conditions marked by pain and vomiting, 'Thorazine' has 3 advantages:
1. 'Thorazine' abolishes the emotional turbulence -- fear, excitation, anxiety, tension -- that adversely affects digestion and the digestive tract.
2. 'Thorazine' effectively controls the nausea and vomiting of gastrointestinal disorders.
3. 'Thorazine' has a mild atropine-like, inhibitory effect on gastric secretion and "would appear to be... tranquilizing agent of choice
when stimulation of gastric secretion is contraindicated."
'Thorazine' should be administered discriminately; and, before prescribing, the physician should be fully conversant with the available literature.
'Thorazine' is available as the hydrochloride in ampuls, tablets and syrup; and as the base in suppositories.

The ataractic, tranquilizing effect of 'Thorazine' can do so much to relieve the emotional stress that is so often a complicating or even a causative factor in many somatic conditions.

You can't tell me anything new about Thorazine®.
You're right, Doctor. We can't tell you anything basically new about 'Thorazine' (brand of chlorpromazine).
Its actions and effects are well known. Its efficacy has been clearly demonstrated. And it has been found
to be relatively safe, even in long-term therapy.
This is why 'Thorazine' remains the first choice in many psychiatric conditions, and the standard against
which newer tranquilizing agents are inevitably compared. In eight years, the replacement for time-tested,
time-proven 'Thorazine' has not been found.
Are you using 'Thorazine' to full advantage in your practice, Doctor?

'Thorazine' Spansule capsules help hospital personnel save time in busy wards. Patients who require tablet medication
three or more times daily can obtain the same therapeutic benefits with only one or, at the most, two doses daily.
To give you optimum flexibility in selecting and adjusting dosages for your individual patients, 'Thorazine' Spansule

ADULT INDICATIONS AND DOSAGE
Dosage should always be adjusted to the response of the individual and the severity of the condition. It is important to increase dosage until symptoms are controlled or side effects become excessively troublesome. SIDE EFFECTS
The drowsiness caused by 'Thorazine' may be unwanted in some patients. It is usually mild to moderate and disappears after the first or second week of therapy. If, however, drowsiness is troublesome, it can usually be controlled by lowering the dosage or by administering small amounts of dextro amphetamine.
Other side effects that have been reported occasionally are dryness of the mouth, nasal congestion, some constipation, miosis in a few patients and, very rarely, mydriasis.
Mild fever (99 F.) may occur occasionally during the first days of therapy with large intramuscular doses.
During 'Thorazine' therapy some patients have an increased appetite and gain weight. Usually these patients reach a plateau beyond which they do not gain further weight.
Causes of vomiting: The physician should always bear in mind that the antiemetic effect of 'Thorazine' may mask signs of overdosage of toxic drugs and may obscure diagnosis of conditions such as intestinal obstruction and brain tumor.
Extrapyramidal Symptoms: With very large doses of 'Thorazine", as frequently used in psychiatric cases over long periods, there have been a few patients who have exhibited extrapyramidal symptoms which closely resemble parkinsonism. Such symptoms are reversible and usually disappear within a short time after the dosage has been decreased or the drug withdrawn. These symptoms can also be controlled by the concomitant administration of standard anti-parkinsonism agents.
Before prescribing 'Thorazine' in any indication other than those given here, the physician should be familiar with dosage, side effects, cautions and contraindications for such indications. This information is available in: Thorazine® Reference Manual and Physician's Desk Reference.

Basic tool of primitive psychiatry
Herbalist's staff (opa osanyin), with birds (wrought iron), Yoruba tribe, Nigeria. 21 inches.
This staff is topped by a circle to which 16 small birds (a magical number) are attached.
The single bird in the middle symbolizes the witch who causes sickness or death.
The staff is placed next to the shrine of Osanyin (the god of the herbalist), along with
eggs and kola, to neutralize the witch's evil spirit. Sometimes the staff is also placed
next to the bed of a sick person to chase away the disease-causing spirit.

BEFORE THE REVOLUTION
Tortured minds and shackled limbs -- common conditions from an era past. The era before the introduction of 'Thorazine', an event that was to revolutionize psychiatric care.
Back in 1954, 'Thorazine' was notable for its effective control of the manifestations of psychosis, for increasing patient accessibility to psychotherapy, for helping restore large numbers of patients to productive lives in the community.
Today, 28 years later, it still is.
THORAZINE® brand of chlorpromazine.

to restore them to their senses
"Surprise Bath" used in colonial times to "restore the distracted to their senses."
Original wood engraving by John De Pol.
Less than 200 years ago, the mentally ill were bled, purged, beaten and sometimes nearly drowned in efforts to
restore them to their senses. The treatment of mental illness has progressed far beyond methods such as these.
One of the major advances in psychiatry has come through chemotherapy -- now an important factor
in the treatment of mental illness, pioneered and developed with 'Thorazine'.
The importance of 'Thorazine' is twofold:
(1) its continued widespread use has established it as a fundamental drug that can be used with confidence and
(2) it has led S.K.F. to the development of related drugs which offer the psychiatrist the opportunities
to help an even greater number of patients.
