MMR - The facts
[08 February 2002]
MMR - The facts
The Government strongly supports the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR) as
the best protection for children against these dangerous
diseases. The government believes - and independent medical experts believe
- that MMR is the right decision for parents and for children.
- MMR saves lives
- The combined MMR vaccine is the best way of protecting our children
- Since MMR was introduced in the UK the number of children catching these diseases has
fallen to an all-time low
- MMR is widely used around the world in over 90 countries, with more than 500 million MMR
doses given
- No child has died of acute measles in over a decade
- Independent experts agree that on all the evidence available, there is no link between
MMR and either autism or inflammatory bowel disease
- Separate single vaccines put children at risk and there is no evidence that giving them
separate vaccines is as safe as MMR
- No country in the world recommends single rather than combined vaccines
For all these reasons the Government believes;
Parents should choose MMR as the best protection
