Nicholas Mockford, a 60 year old British executive for the oil company ExxonMobil has been shot dead in front of his wife in an assassination-style killing in Brussels.

He was shot three times after leaving the Da Marcello restaurant in Rue de Beyseghem at around 10pm on Oct 14.

The reason why news of this murder is just breaking now is because Belgian police imposed a news blackout and the areas government kept the story tightly under wraps.

The fact that such a high profile figure can be assassinated in a public place without any news appearing for two weeks just goes to show you how easily it is to manipulate public perception, hiding things from the media as well as the general population.

One family member told The Daily Telegraph that he believed Mr Mockford had been killed in a professional hit.  The relation, who asked not to be named, said:

“We are all confused about what has happened. Nick was a genuinely lovely, clean-cut, mild mannered, family man.

I don’t think he would put up a fight or argue with someone trying to steal his company car.  He was shot so calmly and so quickly, it smacks horribly of a professional hit, but we can’t fathom why. He isn’t the type to cave in to blackmail and it just doesn’t compute.”

The Belgian prosecutor’s office said last night that there was a “judicial instruction” from Martine Quintin, the investigating judge, that meant they could give no “explanation” and no detail about the killing.

“This is usual in such a serious murder investigation,” a spokesman said.

There are many other aspects to this story that doesn’t add up.  First off,  Mr Mockford is said to have worked for ExxonMobil since the 1970s and was head of marketing for interim technologies, Europe, promoting new types of greener fuel.

It is possible that Mockford stumbled across information that he shouldn’t have, or possibly he was planning to release some sort of fuel or device that undermine the monopoly of the oil cartel, the cartel that his company belonged to.

If that is the case, it could be possible that this hit was ordered from the inside, or possibly from a competitor who is involved with the cartel as well.
