[Video] How Much Mercury Escapes From Broken CFL Light Bulbs?

Low-energy bulbs The stories are abundant in our community and they all go something like this.... "My son was six and nearly recovered from autism when he broke a cfl bulb and regressed, losing language, social skills, and we spent the next 3 years trying to get him back."

Quotes
Far less publicized was a study published in the British medical journal Lancet, which reported that a group of Australians who worked all day under fluorescent lights had higher incidents of skin cancer than people who frequently sunbathed or worked outside!....the Sarasota Dental Society observed that the children schooled under full-spectrum lights developed one-third the number of cavities compared to the children schooled under the standard fluorescent lights....Another study of school children was conducted in 1981 by Catherine Sam and Harry Wohlfarth at the Elves Memorial Child Development Centre, a school for handicapped children in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. There researchers noted marked behavioral improvement among children under full-spectrum lighting as well as decreased stress levels, which they calculated by drops in systolic blood pressures averaging 20 points per child. When the full-spectrum lighting was changed back to the original cool-white fluorescent tubes, the children’s stress levels shot back up and they became disorderly again.....In Germany, Fritz Hollwich, Professor Emeritus, Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Munster, found high levels of stress hormones - specifically adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol - in individuals sitting under cool white fluorescent tubes.  Seeing the Light by Sally Euclaire Osborne

Whatever you do, don't vacuum a broken bulb,.... "That will spread it through the house, it will put it in the air, and then the vacuum cleaner will be contaminated." Instead, environmental experts advise, ventilate the room and leave it for 15 minutes. The safest approach is to wear gloves, and use cardboard and duct tape to pick up small pieces and powder, seal everything in a screw-top jar, and store the jar in a safe place until you can dispose of it at a hazardous waste collection.
A typical household CFL contains about 5 mg of mercury (about the size of a ballpoint pen's tip). To put that in perspective, an old-fashioned mercury thermometer -- the kind you can't even buy anymore -- contains about 500 mg, according to the EPA.  One gram "is enough to contaminate a 20-acre lake to the point where you would have to issue a fish consumption advisory."  [Jan 2008] New rule for new light bulbs
